Well as you all know, as of yesterday, same-sex marriage is now illegal in Maine again, by a slim margin. I could type an impressive volume of vitriol against the people who passed this, and why it's such a stupid idea to allow the majority to vote on a minority's rights to begin with, but I won't. Instead, I thought I'd post this:

(hat-tip to [info]ms_daisy_cutter for the screencap)

That's how much the Catholic church donated in favor of banning same-sex marriage. (You can check for yourself here; it's under question 1.)

Questions:
1. Would Jesus approve of spending over half a million dollars on banning same-sex marriage instead of, you know, feeding and clothing the needy? I know that Maine gets mighty cold this time of year, and I bet that cash could have heated an awful lot of homeless shelters.
2. Here, we see a church getting financially involved in politics. We saw the same thing with the LDS church with Prop 8 in California; they donated many MILLIONS for that. Why do these churches still have tax-exempt status?

Stuff like this is why I stopped considering myself Catholic many years before I ever quit being a believer altogether.

Definitely rage-inducing.

I would write a reasoned response to this post, but I think a series of bloodcurdling screams and animal snarls would say everything I want to far more eloquently than any words.

The Diocese of Phoenix (Kristen's) donated $50,000 of that.

To be honest, the parent organization should lose their exempt status as soon as they make political contributions but they are pro-whiners and experts at playing up the "oppressed majority" status they claim.

The RCC, the Mormons, they're fucking assholes when it comes down to it. I just got done reading how some big American Bishop is telling everyone the Church can't support health care reform because some abortions might end up being paid out of some tiny part of it. That's the kind of fucktarded stands they like to take.

One of my UNC friends is a non-Mormon from Utah, and in a Facebook post she (a flamingly liberal person) made about this, one of her Mormon friends is playing the "I'm not bigoted, but..." card.

OTOH, he goes to grad school in California (Irvine, I think), and pretty much everybody loathes him because he canvassed in support of Prop H8.

Between this comment and your recent post, you're in a "Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Hey, Paul!" kinda mood tonight, eh?

Yes, but to be honest, it's an upbeat-positive sort of hostile vibe. I work most of my stuff out via writing/ranting and get it out of my system. Otherwise my life is going along fairly nicely, given the uncertain future I face. Right now it's good.

Also, I laugh myself silly in those debates. And flip back and find absurd pictures to post, it's very de-stressing.

Wah wah wah.

Don't worry your pretty little head about it. Give it 20 years, it'll be legal in nearly all states. We need to wait for the old guard to die out. By being miffed, you only fuel their schadenfreude.

The times, they are a-changin'.

I know it will be legalized eventually, but people shouldn't have to wait until 2029 for their rights.

And people suffer in the meanwhile. Tell my friend in the military that she should have to continue to hide her relationship for the next 20 years... and be vulnerable to blackmail by homophobic co-workers.

It's really easy to be cavalier about other people's rights.

Don't know if you've seen this yet: http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/pets02/prosexorient.htm (ganked from SA forums).

I'd move to Canada if it weren't so cold there. :(

No, I haven't, but that sucks.

And word. I'd love to live in Quebec, Montreal, or Vancouver, but you know how I feel about the winter, heh.

The Bound Man (a dialogue)
A. He stands and hears: what's wrong, he's thinking?
What sound provokes his heart to sinking?
What was it hurled him to the ground?
B. Like all who once in chains were bound,
He hears around him - iron clinking.
